Powerful earthquake hits Taiwan



A powerful earthquake of 5.9 magnitude has hits off the coast of south-eastern Taiwan on wednesday at 9.08 a.m.(0108 GMT).The epicenter was located 50 km from Taitung City at a depth of 16.6 km.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude was 5.7. The quake was not felt in the capital of Taipei, about 400 kilometres north of the epicentre.

No victims and destructions have been reported yet.

China’s Taiwan island with the population of 23 million people is located in seismically active zone near the large tectonic fault on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.

In 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake took lives of more than 2000 people.
